Mayoor School, Abu Dhabi Promote Sustainable Development

Preserving our Heritage. Protecting our Future. 'Towards a Sustainable Environment for a Sustainable Future’

Abu Dhabi UAE,28th February 2019Mayoor School, Abu Dhabi's commitment towards a cleaner and greener environment is widely promoted through different initiatives undertaken by the students in conjunction with the teachers. The initiatives are well integrated in the curriculum and part of the lesson plan, truely making the School, Yallaschools Eco Champion.

In many countries human beings live outside the ecological boundaries. Species and ecosystems are decreasing and being degraded while ecological footprints are on the increase. What role can schools play here?

Pupils were to be encouraged to develop critical thinking and assume responsibility in the school. Sustainable development means fulfilling the needs people have today, and at the same time preparing to meet the basic needs of coming generations. Three aspects of sustainable development are usually focused upon: ecological, social and economic.

Human activities must take place within ecological constraints and in a sustainable way. Here formal and non-formal teaching has an important role to play in developing an action competence built up of worthwhile knowledge and motivations, but also makes it possible to carry out and bring to fruition newly gained insights and needs.

This term sums up the school’s drive towards a sustainable future. This is not an off the-shelf solution, but the process it involves can be compared to taking a compass bearing for the future. The final destination is unknown but a direction – a vector – can be plotted and be used to join together the ecological, social and economic aspects of social development.

The activities carried out during this journey should be characterized by participation, reflection and contrasting perspectives.

Haweyati (My Identity)

National Identity is a : System of social and moral values associated with the lifestyle of the people in the past, present and future… this system is founded on invoking the essence of the people’s existence and analyzes the factors behind its survival, in order to preserve its existence in the face of all challenges. This can be achieved through strengthening the fundamental concepts of belonging, citizenship, work and productive initiatives.

My Community is my Identity

The UAE society is rich in history and heritage, which affect the function of its future. The extended social relations among its members demonstrate the importance of maintaining unity and cohesion. Students will realize through this value the holistic fabric of UAE society. They will learn about their country, not only through the essential facts, but also through other aspects that preserve the uniformity of the community and promote loyalty and belonging.

As active members of SSI, organized by Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, Mayoor Private School takes the responsibility to conserve, preserve and protect our  Environment, flora, fauna and all-natural resources. We have received many awards from EAD for the school projects implemented by our students to make the Environment more sustainable, stable and safe.

MAYOOR SUSTAINABLE ACTIVITIES

The school has a systematic and well-structured Eco club with energetic and dedicated Green Ambassadors. (Teachers and students). The school celebrates all the Environment related Days with whole School participation and conducts a variety of sustainable activities to make awareness for students and staff.

A rich biodiversity in the school premise facilitates students explore, conduct surveys, identify the new species and research on them.

The school has successfully completed these projects and do the follow up action continuously. The school integrates all its Environment related activities to the curriculum and link to different subjects with the help of proper lesson plans.

Green Audit

The Green School Audit is a tool designed to help school communities to audit their use of natural resources. It provides schools with the methodology to become environmental managers by assessing themselves.

Mayoor School started its Green School Audit in the Academic year 2015-16. They have completed 3 complete audits now. The school use a lot of energy, water and other resources. With the help of its students, staff, and continuous follow up, setting rules, implementing different environment friendly activities, awareness programs, School environment days celebrations, air quality measurements, Native plant collection, maintaining garden, energy and water conservation practices the school is able to reduce its water and energy consumption. The school is committed in continuing GSA activities and increasing itsr Green Rank.

Exposing Students to 'hands on' field trips

It is indeed true that nature inspires creativity, however with the advancement of technology and increased urbanization there has come a gross dissociation between human beings and their environment. Most children today lead a nature deficit lifestyle. They prefer to live, learn and play indoors. It is thus a sad reality that a generation of children today have been raised completely in the indoors within restricted and confined spaces.

As an active member of SSI Mayoor students participated and implemented different levels of projects and classroom activities in school and awarded by Environment Agency Abu Dhabi.

Training of the Trainer

Environment Educators have a huge challenge before them as they need to change attitudes and initiative a behavior change by going beyond the confines of just imparting knowledge. Hence environment education has to be sustained in its impact over time, across all levels and subjects in schools. The Training of The Trainer Module focuses on training teachers to introduce concepts of Environment Education in the mainstream curriculums.
